The Charismatic Strategic Leader
Introduction
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
— Steve Jobs
ENTJs (Commanders) are natural-born leaders. Embodying charisma and confidence, ENTJs display authority that draws crowds toward a common goal. However, these personalities are also often characterized by a ruthless level of rationality, using drive, determination, and a sharp mind to achieve their self-set goals. Their intensity may sometimes make people uncomfortable, but ultimately, ENTJs take pride in both their work ethic and an impressive level of self-discipline.
ENTJs see themselves as a powerful positive influence on others.
Striving for Greatness
If there's one thing this type loves, it's a good challenge—big or small. They firmly believe that with enough time and resources, any goal can be achieved. This quality makes ENTJs excellent entrepreneurs, and their ability to think strategically and maintain long-term focus while executing each step with determination and precision makes them formidable business leaders.
This determination is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. ENTJs are likely to push through with sheer willpower where others might give up and move on, often bringing everyone else along with them and achieving great results in the process.
The underlying thought running through the ENTJ's mind might be, "I don't mind being called a jerk, as long as I'm an efficient one."
At the negotiating table—whether in business or buying a car—ENTJs are dominant, relentless, and unyielding. This isn't because they're inherently cruel or malicious, but because they genuinely enjoy the challenge, the battle of wits, and the back-and-forth that comes with this environment. Even if the other side can't keep up, it's no reason for them to give up their core belief in ultimate victory.
ENTJs respect people who are their intellectual equals and who demonstrate the same precision and quality in their actions. They have a special skill for recognizing others' talents, which helps in team-building efforts (because no matter how talented, no one can do everything alone). However, they also have a special skill for pointing out others' failures with a ruthless level of bluntness, and this is where real problems can start.
A Worthy Challenge
Emotional expression isn't the strong suit of any Analyst (NT) type, but the ENTJ's distance from their emotions is especially public and directly felt by a much wider range of people. In professional settings especially, these personalities may unintentionally overlook the emotional sensitivity of individuals they see as inefficient or lazy. For this type, emotional expression is generally seen as a sign of weakness, and this approach can easily make enemies.
It's worth remembering that ENTJs are absolutely dependent on having a functioning team, not just to achieve their goals but also for validation and feedback. Interestingly, they are very sensitive to this.
ENTJs are true forces of nature, cultivating an image of being larger than life—and often, they are. But it's important to remember that their status comes not just from their own actions, but also from the actions of the team that supports them. Recognizing the contributions, talents, and needs of their support network—especially from an emotional perspective—is crucial.
